Retreat Garden

SEPTEMBER  GARDEN  OPEN  CANCELLED!
We regret that due to Welsh Water
interference, we have been forced to
close on 13th September.

There is something therapeutic about a garden. We hope that while our visitors are exploring our garden and meadow they will find that they have to slow down to the pace of nature. 'The best place to find God is in a garden.' George Bernard Shaw.

When we first moved to Bryndolau nearly 20 years ago, apart from a few shrubs, the area around the house was a blank canvas. Determined not to design a high-maintenance garden – as we had done in the past – we ended up with exactly that, in spite of ourselves! It seems that our love of plants simply refuses to be curtailed and we always convince ourselves that we can squeeze in just another one. In the last few years, it has become obvious to us that we need to be mindful of climate change and hence, our choice of plants now is on a shorter list of those that can endure high winds in Winter and hot temperatures in the Summer. Many fragile perennials have been replaced with sturdy shrubs.

We open our Retreat Garden between June and September on the second Saturday of each month for those who wish to spend some time away from household chores and worries. ( 14th June, 12th July, 16th August, 13th September).

You are welcome to follow our mown meadow paths, explore the wildlife pond and orchard or simply sit in the garden and enjoy the distant views. It is well worth the climb to the top of our Magic Hill where there is a seat to enjoy the 360˚ views. On a rainy day, visitors can sit in our Retreat Hut in the meadow or in our conservatory. Bring a friend if you would like to. There is no charge. Donations to our local church. A cream tea is available on request at £7.50 p.p.
